Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about UK Citizenship by Double Descent.

Born After 1st January 1983
If you were born after 1st January 1983, you could be eligible for British citizenship by double descent if:
  • Your grandfather was born in the UK and served in the Crown Service during your parents’ birth
  • You or one of your parents were born in a former British colony
  • One of your parents had a UK-born mother, provided they weren’t born to a British father and were registered as British citizens between 2nd February and 31st December 1982
Born Before 1st January 1983

For those born before 1st January 1983, eligibility for British citizenship by double descent is possible if:

  • You or one of your parents were born in a former British territory
  • You or one of your parents were registered as a British citizen
  • One of your parents was in Crown service during your birth

When You Might Need an Immigration Solicitor

Alternative Route: UK Ancestry Visa

An alternate avenue to British citizenship is the UK Ancestry visa. To qualify for this visa, you need a grandparent who was born:

  • In the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man.
  • Before 31st March 1922 in Ireland.
  • On a UK-registered ship or aircraft owned by the British government.

The Home Office guidance permits Ancestry visa application even if you or your parent were adopted or if your parents or grandparents weren’t married. However, step-parents cannot facilitate this application.

With an Ancestry visa, you can reside in the UK for 5 years, and then choose to extend your visa or apply for settlement (ILR). After holding ILR for a year, you become eligible to apply for UK citizenship.
