Steps for Tier 1 Investor Visa Extension

To get an extension on your Investor Visa, you need to fill out an application and show that you meet the requirements.

If you get an Investor Visa (also called a Tier 1 Investor Visa) to come to the UK, it will be good for three years and four months at first. You may be able to get an extra two years if you meet the requirements.

Unfortunately, recent changes to the process for renewing the Investor Visa have made it harder than ever to get another one.

Getting your investor visa extended can be a difficult process that requires a lot of documents to show why you should be granted the new visa.

If you don’t give enough information to show that you meet the requirements, your application may be turned down.

Who is Eligible for Tier 1 Investor Visa Extension?

Since the rules for the Investor Visa have changed, the date someone was first given the visa determines whether they can apply for an extension.

Visa given before November 6, 2014

If you got your visa before this date, you can extend it if you meet these requirements:

  • Make sure you have at least £1 million in the UK.
  • Put at least £750,000 (or 75% of the total value) into bonds issued by the UK government, shares issued by UK corporations, or loan capital from UK companies
  • Invested within three months of starting.

Visas issued on or after November 6, 2014

Prior to this deadline, applicants must provide the following:

  • Make sure you have at least £2 million in the UK.
  • Can show proof that they put the money into qualified UK businesses through loan or share capital investments
  • Placed the investment within three months of arriving in the UK (barring exceptional circumstances)
  • If you need to bring someone with you on your visa, you should apply for their visa extensions at the same time.

What are the Requirements for a Tier 1 Investor Visa Extension?

To get the visa renewal, you have to show that you made the investment within three months of the start date of your investor visa and that you have control of the funds.

Minimum amount of funds you control

You need to prove that you have control over your money in the UK.

If you got your visa before November 6, 2014, you should be ready to show proof of the following:

  • Within the UK, you have control over £1 million.
    • Either you or your partner owns the money.
    • That you have at least £2 million in personal assets and that the money was lent to you by a UK-regulated bank.

Please keep in mind that you can’t mix the two kinds of money.

If you got the visa on or after November 6, 2014, you have to show that you spent the whole amount, which is £2 million of your own or your partner’s money.

Required start date for investors

You need to show a lot of proof to demonstrate how and when you spent your money.

You need to show several investment portfolio reports from a financial company regulated in the UK.

These papers must demonstrate:

  • If you got your visa before November 6, 2014, you put at least £750,000 into UK government bonds or a UK business within three months of your start date.
  • If your visa was approved after November 6, 2014, you put all £2 million into the business.
  • This level of investment stayed the same during the whole time of your visa.

The date you first came to the UK on this visa is your “investor start date.”

In other cases, it could mean the date that your application or move application was accepted.

With an Investor Visa, can I stay in the UK for a long time?

With an Investor Visa, you can move to the UK and live there permanently. Some people may be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) after two or three years, while others will have to wait five years.

You cannot count any time you spent in the UK on a different visa towards your time spent there as a resident of ILR.

The date your first application was approved is when your qualifying period starts. You have up to 28 days before the qualifying period ends to ask for a settlement.

You have to meet the requirements for indefinite leave to stay, which are:

Visas granted prior to November 6, 2013.

If you got your visa before this date, the old rules will still apply if you want to renew it.

You need to show UK Visas and Immigration that you meet these requirements:

  • Have at least £1 million in cash on hand in the UK.
  • Have put at least 75% of your money into UK-based businesses, UK government bonds, or loan capital for companies that are already open and trading.
  • Moreover, have kept the investment up for the whole visa time
  • Have put at least £10 million into the account every two years, £% million every three years, or £1 million every five years.
  • Do not miss any qualifying days during the qualifying time period
  • Make sure you can speak and write English well (at least B2 level) and pass the Life in the UK test (if needed).
  • Your payment request needs to be sent by April 5, 2022.

Visas issued Between November 6, 2014–March 28, 2019.

If your visa was granted on or around this date, you must meet the following requirements for your application for indefinite leave to remain:

  • There is at least £2 million in your own name in the UK.
